It is distributed as free software and written using its own GUI toolkit. It supports the ISO/IEC standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office formats among others. As of November 2009, OpenOffice supports over 110 languages.
Open Office works wonderfully with Screen Readers such as NVDA and Thunder. However, some users have reported that not all Tabs and dialogue boxes are being read with their screen readers. To resolve this, you need to download and install the Java Access Bridge:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]You then need to enable assistive technology support in OpenOffice.org. You can do this from the Accessibility page of the Options dialog. Unfortunately, before you enable this, OpenOffice.org is inaccessible, which makes this task extremely difficult for a screen reader user. Alternatively, download and run the registry patch from
